I Get By With a Lot of Help from My Friends

Just about 18 months ago, the amazing team at Rainmaker Digital (formerly Copyblogger Media) invited me to join them.

My first thought? “What’s going to happen to Big Brand System?” And until I had a good answer for that question, I wasn’t ready to consider going to work for someone else.

Fortunately, after spending some time thinking, planning, and (especially) talking to friends, I was able to come up with a plan. For more on what I’ve done, read The Future of Big Brand System, plus a 4 Letter Word You Should Know.

And it’s because of those friends and colleagues that this website has continued to chug along, faithfully delivering a new piece of content every single week. We either publish a post, or send our the Weekend Digest newsletter (which was recently featured in this post on Copyblogger) without fail.

With Thanksgiving in the US coming up next week, I’ve been thinking a lot about the people who’ve made it possible to keep this blog going strong over the past 18 months.

And in today’s post, I want to tell you a bit more about each of them. I hope you’ll take the opportunity to send them your thanks in the comments of this post. Without them, this site wouldn’t be here!

Piper Larson

The first person I want to highlight isn’t one of the guest contributors. She’s the ring leader who has kept this little circus going these past 18 months (longer, even).

Piper Larson came on as my assistant in early 2013. Since I joined the team at Rainmaker Digital, her role has expanded to Content Manager. She’s the person that keeps everything running smoothly with all the guest writers you see below. She coordinates the publishing schedule, reminds them about their submissions, and follows up with me.

The past 18 months worth of great content from this site wouldn’t have been possible without her. Thanks, Piper!

How we know each other:

Amy’s a traveling woman. I first met her at a South by Southwest (SXSW) conference back in 2011.

We’ve seen each other in real life several times since then, and she’s in my mastermind group and has stayed at my home. Amy took over the HitPublish podcast this past June, and if you haven’t heard it yet, she’s doing an amazing job.

What she’s written for Big Brand System:

Amy’s secret power:

Actually, this is no secret. Amy brings a wicked sense of humor to everything she does. She’s able to make you laugh while you learn — and ability that is serving her well with every episode of HitPublish, like this recent one, where she compares sales copy to how people interview for jobs (complete with angelic harps, and “logistical shopping receptacle technicians”).

How to Stand Out from the Crowd with an Unforgettable Personal BrandKaryn Greenstreet

Her sites:

How we know each other:

My friendship with Karyn goes back to 2004. I applied to be a member in one of her virtual mastermind groups, and we’ve been friends every since.

What she’s written for Big Brand System:

Karyn’s secret power:

Karyn’s secret power, which I value more than she’ll ever know, is to ask incisive questions at the perfect moment. She’s that friend who encourages you to turn over that rock on the ground and explore what you’ll find underneath. This is a wonderful trait for the business world: it helps you see possibilities around every corner.

His sites:

How we know each other:

Dave and I have tried (to no avail) to remember how we first “online met.” We don’t know. But if I had to guess, I’d say it was sometime around 2011. We were both big fans of Copyblogger at the time. Dave went on to join the team at Constant Contact in 2012, and proceeded to turn their blog into a powerhouse content marketing vehicle for them.

What he’s written for Big Brand System:

Dave’s secret power:

Dave is a fantastic networker … he’s super easy to talk to, forever cheerful, and his inquisitive personality keeps him in learning mode at all times. That makes him very, very good at what he does!

EnchantingMarketing.com

How we know each other:

Henneke and I have both written for Copyblogger for many years. We finally met in person at the 2014 Authority event. I had just been offered a job on the team that morning, and my head was swimming. I hope Henneke didn’t notice!

Now I am helping to coordinate Henneke’s posts on Copyblogger, and am grateful the wisdom she’s shared with us here on Big Brand System.

What she’s written for Big Brand System:

Henneke’s secret power:

Henneke’s most obvious power is, of course, her delightful writing voice, which is recognizable from a distance! But her secret power is that she’s a gifted teacher who knows how to guide students toward finding their own voice in their writing.

How I know her:

Laura’s someone I’ve “online known” for years, and again — I don’t think either of us would be able to remember how we met. I’ve done interviews for her, she’s written for me. And now she’s in a high-profile job, and so am I.

So you could say we kind of came up in this online world together. 🙂

Laura’s secret power:

Laura is a competitive body builder. And her hard-driving nature paired with her eternal optimism makes her push her physical limits and shine in her work, too.

How we know each other:

Kelly and I met at the first SXSW conference I attended in 2011. She had written a book about writing ebooks, and I was thinking about creating some templates in OpenOffice to make it easier for people to create their own ebooks.

We had both written for Copyblogger at that point, and attended the Copyblogger writer’s party. Someone had the wisdom to stand us in front of one another and say “You two need to talk!”

And the rest, as they say, is Ebook Evolution.

What Kelly’s written for Big Brand System:

Kelly’s secret power:

Kelly’s secret power is to see the positive in every situation. She sees connections and possibilities where no one else can. And now that she’s transitioned into a new business — graphic recording for live events — she continues to explore new possibilities.

Her sites:

How we know each other:

Raubi is someone else I met for the first time at the Authority conference in 2014. She’s written for Copyblogger, and I was thrilled when she agreed to write for this site, too.

What Raubi’s written for Big Brand System:

Your New Website Just Went Live. Now What?

Raubi’s secret power:

Raubi has a depth of professional knowledge that makes her writing really on target and interesting. She’s tenacious and hard working. And I love how clear and easy-to-understand her writing is.

  1. Love this post Pamela and have truly enjoyed reading all these amazing writers! Also thrilled to be one of those who’d be joining them here on BBS!

Thank you most importantly for as always being real and sharing how much teamwork goes into running a content-rich site!

  2. What a lovely surprise to start my day. You are absolutely the best, this totally put a smile on my face.

We HAVE “grown-up” together—in this crazy digital world—which makes it’s even more fun to be able to be part of Big Brand System and have the opportunity to work with you again.

And now I’m totally wracking my brain to remember how we did meet initially?!? Third Tribe maybe?

  3. Pamela, I’ve read—with great pleasure—many of the writers you’ve listed; have to check the rest out. Thanks to them all, and of course to you, for giving them a forum, and for giving us their knowledge. And to all the statesiders, Happy Thanksgiving.

  4. Too many blessings to count!

You have a delightfully talented, supportive, and amazing circle of friends, Pamela! 🙂

Henneke Duistermaat is someone I adore and admire. Like you, she will forever remain on my radar. Her writing skills are exemplary, her advice is top hat, and her blog illustrations of Henrietta are some of my favorites.

Amy Harrison is a hoot and a half! Her content is some of the most personable and entertaining on the web. Everything she touches turns to gold.

Kudos and cupcakes to Piper Larson in her role as Content Manager!
